Stuff I Like: PRCExplorer
Regis Nicolas, one of PalmSource's lead developers on Palm OS 5.0 in France, has just released a utility called PRCExplorer. To quote his email:
PRCExplorer is a developer tool to explore/view/dump/save resources stored inside PRC. It's a Freeware that you can find at http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodID=40542
I am interested in any feedback but, as the Readme.txt states, I do not provide any official support. I do evolve it though but I cannot guarantee deliveries nor features.
I just downloaded this application and tried it out on some of the programs I've been developing. My immediate reaction is "this is awesome!". It lets you immediately dig into all the resources of your PRC file, viewing bitmaps, menus, alerts, and forms. You can also save off individual resources and binary dump files, and code resources show up both as binary data and 68K disassembly. The application only supports resource databases, so you'll need another tool to inspect your PDB files, but for what it does, its an excellent product, and the price can't be beat.
One caveat: the application only works on Windows (although I'd expect it to work with Virtual PC on the Macintosh).
Update: 12 July 2002
PRCExplorer has gotten better since I originally wrote about it. One of the coolest new features is the ability to ouput PilRC source for individual resources or your whole PRC file. It does a great job with form, but some resources just show up as hex data. The developer has told me that a future version will be able to be run from the command line to do automatic PRC-to-RCP conversion. The viewer has improved too, now showing codee disassembly for shared libraries, and the bitmap and icon family viewers now handle high-density bitmaps as used in Palm OS 5.
