PalmSource 2002, Day 1

For this week, palmoswerks is running a special daily weblog about PalmSource 2002 where I'll be updating the site througout the day with information on the show.

Since the San Jose Convention Center is going to be 802.11b-enabled, I'll be able to post notes as the day goes by, and people at the show should be able to view everything nicely.

Monday is a travel day. I've got a 1:50PM flight out of Austin up to Dallas, then Dallas to San Jose arriving in the middle of rush hour. I found out last night that the hotel (the Fairmont) doesn't have shuttle service, so I'll have to get a taxi. At least I've got exit row seats assigned for both flights, and a vegetarian snack set up on AA for the DFW-SJC leg.

C++ Templates as Hack-of-the-Night

I was up late working on the survey application for the show. The Metrowerks booth will have two Palm IIIc's setup to gather information from show participants. The application was written using our new Object Library for Palm OS, and I'll be dissecting some of the code in my talk on Friday. My hack-of-the-night was realizing that the survey pages that consisted of a collection or push buttons or check boxes could be interesting applications of C++ templates. I saved a lot of coding work by writing one template class based on CForm, then instantiating it with the resource IDs as template parameters. After a night's sleep, I think I should have just made a base class, then specialized through derivation, but for this one-time-use app, either method works well.
