i705 and Shameless Plug
Palm officially announced their new wireless device, the Palm i705, today. This has been an open secret for months, ever since an FCC approval document got leaked at the end of Summer 2001. Other sites cover this better. PalmInfoCenter's story is one of the better ones.
I'm pretty optimistic about this device. If I didn't already have a QCP-6035 that I use everyday, one of these would probably become my standard device, much like the Palm VIIx was last year. From a programmer's point of view, it seems to be similar to the Palm VIIx, using INetLib for its connectivity. Palm hasn't released developer information about sending notifications to the device, so we don't yet know how to enable our applications with always-on performance. Details on this should arrive at PalmSource 2002.
Here's my Shameless Plug. If you're excited about this device, you should learn how to make your own Web Clipping applications and how to integrate that functionality into your Palm OS apps. One of the best ways to learn is to read my book, Palm OS Web Application Developer's Guide. While this book was written for the Palm VII/VIIx, it covers Palm OS 4.0 and recent changes to web clipping, and it provides lots of experienced advice about developing a wireless service and getting it running. The book is available in many larger bookstores, or online from retailers like Amazon.
