Busy Working on V9
I've been really busy working on V9, which will be out this fall. However, in the meantime, I've been asked online why someone would want to update to V8 right now. There are a few good reasons, especially if you're currently using R6 or R7:
- V8's debugger can talk to the Palm OS 5 Simulator, while the debuggers in older versions of the product have communications problems.
- V8's emphasis on strict code helps you make sure your apps will work on the new OS.
- We're continually checking the Palm OS SDK releases against the current product, so we're on top of any issues -- the template fix for the 5.0 SDK on my site is just one example.
- Buying it now will give a substantial discount on the purchase of V9, plus you'll get several months of use out of the current toolset. Without buying V8, you'll have to pay full price to upgrade to V9, while version-to-version upgrades tend to be half-price. If you're a V7 user, you might as well pay half-price now to get to V8, then pay half-price later this fall to get to V9, rather than paying full price in the fall.
- If you have problems, you're far more likely to get a response/solution if you're on the current tools. We fixed a lot of bugs going from V7 to V8, and if you hit a problem that was fixed in the upgrade, support will just tell you to get the latest version.
- We won't be continuing the "Race Fever" registration incentive with V9, so upgrading now is the only way to get a free copy of this really cool game with a copy of a development toolkit. GRIN
If you want to read the article I wrote back when V8 was being released about the new features, see http://www.palmoswerks.com/stories/storyReader$10.
Yes, this is me putting on my marketing hat... but I'm allowed every once in a while, right?
In other news, I was at work late tonight finishing the wizard fixes for the 8.3 patch. I've updated them to work with either Palm OS SDK 4 or SDK 5, using a runtime check to generate the proper resources. 8.3 has all of the other fixes I've mentioned here, and I'm hoping it will get through QA sometime next week and be ready for posting.
